This song is associated with Victoria Spivey, an interesting singer and songwriter who lived in New York for years. She had a large one room apartment that she shared with her friend and manager, Lenny. She was a good singer and many musicians from the 1940's to the 1960's including Lead Belly and Bob Dylan enjoyed her company and hospitality.
As TB or tuberculosis has been a grave illness during most of man's stay on earth, other songwriters have given their attention to this gruesome topic. The yodeling brakeman - Jimmy Rogers, who died of tuberculosis, had a song about having the disease. I enjoyed listening to a version of Rogers' song by John Jackson from Virginia.
